I came across Mihaly Csiksxentmihalyi’s TedX presentation on what he calls “Flow” somewhat by accident. I heard an interview on NPR of Steven Kotler, who has written a new book called “The Rise of the Superhuman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Performance.” The interview was utterly fascinating – Kotler spoke about athletes that participate in extreme sports and reach their height of athletic performance in their sports, and how they have certain neurological and physiological processes in common. Specifically, he focused a lot on the idea that ultimate human performance in sports comes out of the alpha brainwave state. This is the same state the one reaches through meditation, and is also the state where musicsl and artistic creativity are heightened.”
After I did some research, I found out the Mihaly Csiksxentmihalyi’s presentation covers the whole issue in a far more comprehensive, well-researched and in depth manner. I like this talk, which covers a lot of dimensions, biology, brain chemistry, psychology, education, etc… Interestingly enough, years ago when I lived in South Africa I helped a holistic healer, Dr. John Bell, work on a book, and he said healing was a condition where the body’s processes where in a state of “flow,” as opposed to congestion or blocking. I thought his ideas rang true, and were intuitive. He said that his job, as a healer, was to simply help his clients return their physical bodies – as well as their emotional and mental state – into a condition of flow.
